A Filipino classic, often served as party food or in quick-service restaurants, this dish is brimming with nostalgia and interest. It’s loaded with juicy Ground Beef and all-beef hot dogs and has a unique sweetness thanks to Filipino banana ketchup. Hearty and satisfying, serve with a side salad or a half portion for the kids menu.
Ingredients
Here are the following ingredients:
Sweet Filipino Spaghetti Sauce
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) canola oil
- 3 lb (1.5 kg) Ground Beef (Medium)
- 1 lb (500 g) all-beef hot dogs, sliced
- 8 oz (250 g) finely chopped onion, about 2 cups (500 mL)
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) minced garlic
- 6 cups (1.5 L) marinara sauce
- 2 cups (500 mL) banana ketchup
- 2 cups (500 mL) beef stock (no salt added)
- 1 cup (250 mL) evaporated milk
- 3 tbsp (45 mL) brown sugar
- 1 tsp (5 mL) kosher salt
- ½ tsp (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper
Service
- 4 lb (2 kg) spaghetti, blanched
- 8 oz (250 g) shredded Cheddar cheese, about 2 cups (500 mL)
- Sprigs fresh parsley
Preparation
- Sweet Filipino Spaghetti Sauce: Heat oil in large saucepan set over medium-high heat. Cook beef until browned. Drain off fat.
- In the same saucepan set over medium heat, add hot dogs, onion and garlic. Cook until onion has softened.
- Add marinara sauce, banana ketchup, beef stock, evaporated milk, brown sugar, salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Simmer, partially covered, for 45 to 60 minutes or until flavourful and sauce has thickened. Adjust seasoning as needed. Cool, cover and refrigerate or hold for service.
Service
- Add ¾ cup (175 mL) Sweet Filipino Spaghetti Sauce to skillet; bring to a boil. Add a splash of water or stock to loosen, if needed. Add 1½ cups (375 mL) blanched spaghetti.
- Cook, tossing often, until heated through and sauce clings to pasta.
- Plate spaghetti and top with 2 tbsp (30 mL) shredded cheese. Garnish with parsley sprig.
Chef's Tip
Reduce portion for a kids’ meal option and omit parsley.
This dish is traditionally served with spaghetti, but any long pasta (dried or fresh) such as fettuccini, linguine or bucatini also works well. For a hit of spice, drizzle with chili oil or hot sauce.
